In the long run, many (fairly) serious imagers will go ahead and devote a machine to serve as an imaging computer. In this case, the "buy a cheap windows netbook" advice isn't bad advice. You have a job to do, so don't get all philosophical and religious. Pick the software that you need to do the job and don't worry about what platform it runs on. Once you get the imaging computer (regardless of OS) dialed in, turn off any sort of automatic updates and leave it the heck alone.
